Aston Villas aspirations for a top-two finish were dampened at a misty Villa Park as they salvaged a late 1-1 draw against a gritty Leeds Utd side.
The result sees the hosts remain in third position, while for the visitors, this hard-earned point provides a vital cushion in their battle to stay clear of the relegation scrap.
Heading into the match, the Villans were looking to capitalise on their momentum and cement their Champions League credentials, hoping to narrow the gap on the leaders.
Leeds Utd arrived with the primary goal of ending their dismal run of form on the road and putting some much-needed daylight between themselves and the bottom three.
In a game of tactical patience, the deadlock was finally broken in the 31st minute when Anton Stach stepped up for a free-kick. Positioned out on the left, everyone expected a cross, but Anton Stach spotted the goalkeeper positionned slightly on the right and expertly whipped the ball directly into the upper near corner (0-1).
Despite the pressure, the visitors held firm until the 88th minute when a corner from the left sparked chaos. The ball was headed back across the face of goal to the back post, where Tammy Abraham was waiting to deflect the ball with his thigh, lifting it over the crowded defence and into the left corner of the net (1-1).
This late strike continued Villa's trend of finding the net in the closing stages, while for the visitors, it was the fourth consecutive away game in which they managed to find the scoresheet.
Unbeaten in three matches, Aston Villa continue to rely on their rock-solid foundation at the back, having conceded only 28 goals all season to maintain a high ranking in the defensive standings. While they struggled to maintain focus early on, their overall home form remains a significant asset in their quest for European football.
Currently sitting in third place with 51 points, they will now turn their attention to a tricky trip to Molineux, looking to turn these draws into victories to keep pace with the top two.
Leeds Utd showed remarkable resilience to secure their third consecutive away draw, even if their winless streak away from home has now extended to 11 matches.
Their defensive vulnerability remains a concern, with a clean sheet rate of just 15%, but this result keeps them in 15th place and moves them seven points clear of the drop zone.
Beyond the understandable frustration of having let two points slip away in the last minutes, they will take huge confidence from this performance as they prepare for the daunting visit of Manchester City to Elland Road next weekend.
2nd consecutive draw for Leeds Utd. 3rd consecutive away draw for Leeds Utd. 3rd consecutive game where Aston Villa scored. 2nd consecutive home game where Aston Villa scored. 5th consecutive game where Leeds Utd conceded. 4th consecutive away game where Leeds Utd conceded. 3rd consecutive game where Leeds Utd scored. 4th consecutive away game where Leeds Utd scored.

Domination Index calculation method
⌄
The Domination Index calculation is based on the average of the following percentages:
- Possession percentage - Percentage of match corners awarded to each team - Percentage of time each team has been in the lead
The calculation used is: AVERAGE OF (% Possession x 4, % Corners and % Lead duration x 2)
'Domination' in football can be perceived in different ways. The goal of the Domination Index, as calculated here, is not about trying to determine things like 'who should have won' or which team has been simply attacking the most.
Sometimes a team has easily scored once or twice in the beginning of the game and then opts for a more reactive stance, with a focus on hindering the opponent's game. At the end of the match, the opponent might have had more possession, and even more shots, but that does not necessarily mean they have dominated the other team.
Considering possession as only one of the factors, which also include corners (clearly indicating a form of pressure on the opponent's defence), and how much of the 90-minute match duration each team has been leading, allows to also account for when teams have simply been busy controling the game, without needing to attack a lot.

The 'League average' indicator refers to the average value for all teams in the league since the beginning of the season.
Note: in the table above, to allow for averaging duration values based on a total of 90 minutes per game, goals scored on the 45th minute and during added time of the first half are all considered to be scored on the 45th minute, and goals scored on the 90th minute and during added time of the second half are also considered scored on the 90th minute.
In this example, Aston Villa have been in the lead for an average duration of 21.1 minutes per match (based on a 90-minute match duration), which is lower than the average duration of 22.5 minutes per match during which their opponents were in the lead in those matches.
Non-crucial goals scored: goals scored that increased an existing lead, or decreased the opponent's existing lead.
Non-crucial goals conceded: goals conceded that decreased an existing lead, or increased the opponent's existing lead.
Note regarding the Goals giving the lead and the goals giving lead to opponent values: both the team and the opponent team might take the lead more than once during a single match,
so the total number of goals giving the lead to a team might be higher than the number of matches played by the team.
Lead-defending ability Aston Villa have taken the lead 29 times and have conceded an equalizer on 10 instances, translating into a lead-defending rate of 66% (for an opponents' equalizing rate of 34%).
Equalizing ability Of the 22 times that Aston Villa's opponents have taken the lead, Aston Villa have managed to score an equalizer on 11 instances, translating into an equalizing rate of 50%.
In this example, Aston Villa have been in the lead for an average duration of 29.9 minutes per match played at home (based on a 90-minute match duration), which is longer than the average duration of 18.9 minutes per match during which their opponents were in the lead in those matches.
Lead-defending ability (at home) In home matches, Aston Villa have taken the lead 18 times and have conceded an equalizer on 6 occasions, translating into a home lead-defending rate of 67% (for an opponents' equalizing rate of 33%).
Equalizing ability (at home) Of the 7 times that Aston Villa's opponents have taken the lead when Aston Villa were playing at home, Aston Villa have managed to score an equalizer on 2 occasions, translating into a home equalizing rate of 29%.
In this example, Aston Villa have been in the lead for an average duration of 12.3 minutes per match played away (based on a 90-minute match duration), which is lower than the average duration of 26.2 minutes per match during which their opponents were in the lead in those matches.
Lead-defending ability (away) In away matches, Aston Villa have taken the lead 11 times and have conceded an equalizer on 4 occasions, translating into an away lead-defending rate of 64% (for an opponents' equalizing rate of 36%).
