The title race pressure at the Emirates reached a boiling point today, but Arsenal finally found the cooling touch they needed to stay ahead of the chasing pack.
Arsenal's narrow 1-0 victory over Newcastle Utd ensures they keep their noses in front at the summit, responding perfectly to the threat of a Manchester City takeover.
Before the whistle, the tension was palpable for the home side, who were desperate to avoid a third consecutive defeat that could have seen their championship dreams start to slip away.
On the other side, the Magpies arrived in London hoping to arrest a worrying slide and pull themselves away from the bottom half of the table, though their defensive frailties remained a significant cause for concern.
The decisive moment arrived early, settling the nerves of the home faithful in the 9th minute. It was a well-worked set-piece routine that carved open the visitors; after a short corner on the right, Martin Odegaard picked out Kai Havertz inside the area. Havertz kept his composure to cut the ball back for Eberechi Eze on the edge of the box, who unleashed a first-time right-footed strike that flew into the top left corner (1-0).
This early breakthrough played right into Arsenal's hands, as they have now scored the opening goal in 23 of their 34 matches this season.
The Gunners league-leading defence held firm, ensuring they didn't need to find a second goal to secure the points. Arsenal effectively managed the game to return to winning ways, and by keeping a clean sheet, they further solidified their position as the leagues most efficient defensive unit with just 26 goals conceded.
This result reinforces their dominance at the top of the Home table, where they have amassed 41 points, and keeps their scoring streak alive for a 12th consecutive match. Looking ahead to their clash with Fulham, they will be buoyed by their status as the strongest second-half team in the division, a trait that helped them navigate a tense final period here.
For Newcastle, this result marks a bruising 4th consecutive defeat, a run that highlights their struggle to recover once they fall behind.
The Magpies have now lost 9 out of 10 matches where they conceded the first goal, a statistic that was once again their undoing following Ezes early strike.
They remain stuck in the bottom half of the table in 14th place and will need to find a way to plug a defence that frequently falters late on before they host Brighton.
4th consecutive defeat for Newcastle Utd. 2nd consecutive away defeat for Newcastle Utd. 12th consecutive game where Arsenal scored. 6th consecutive home game where Arsenal scored. 4th consecutive game where Newcastle Utd conceded. 2nd consecutive away game where Newcastle Utd conceded.
To calculate the above duration values based on a total of 90 minutes, goals scored on the 45th minute and during added time of the first half are considered scored on the 45th minute, and goals scored on the 90th minute and during added time of the second half are considered scored on the 90th minute.

Domination Index calculation method
⌄
The Domination Index calculation is based on the average of the following percentages:
- Possession percentage - Percentage of match corners awarded to each team - Percentage of time each team has been in the lead
The calculation used is: AVERAGE OF (% Possession x 4, % Corners and % Lead duration x 2)
'Domination' in football can be perceived in different ways. The goal of the Domination Index, as calculated here, is not about trying to determine things like 'who should have won' or which team has been simply attacking the most.
Sometimes a team has easily scored once or twice in the beginning of the game and then opts for a more reactive stance, with a focus on hindering the opponent's game. At the end of the match, the opponent might have had more possession, and even more shots, but that does not necessarily mean they have dominated the other team.
Considering possession as only one of the factors, which also include corners (clearly indicating a form of pressure on the opponent's defence), and how much of the 90-minute match duration each team has been leading, allows to also account for when teams have simply been busy controling the game, without needing to attack a lot.

The 'League average' indicator refers to the average value for all teams in the league since the beginning of the season.
Note: in the table above, to allow for averaging duration values based on a total of 90 minutes per game, goals scored on the 45th minute and during added time of the first half are all considered to be scored on the 45th minute, and goals scored on the 90th minute and during added time of the second half are also considered scored on the 90th minute.
In this example, Arsenal have been in the lead for an average duration of 38.1 minutes per match (based on a 90-minute match duration), which is longer than the average duration of 7.6 minutes per match during which their opponents were in the lead in those matches.
Non-crucial goals scored: goals scored that increased an existing lead, or decreased the opponent's existing lead.
Non-crucial goals conceded: goals conceded that decreased an existing lead, or increased the opponent's existing lead.
Note regarding the Goals giving the lead and the goals giving lead to opponent values: both the team and the opponent team might take the lead more than once during a single match,
so the total number of goals giving the lead to a team might be higher than the number of matches played by the team.
Lead-defending ability Arsenal have taken the lead 33 times and have conceded an equalizer on 7 instances, translating into a lead-defending rate of 79% (for an opponents' equalizing rate of 21%).
Equalizing ability Of the 14 times that Arsenal's opponents have taken the lead, Arsenal have managed to score an equalizer on 9 instances, translating into an equalizing rate of 64%.
In this example, Arsenal have been in the lead for an average duration of 42.5 minutes per match played at home (based on a 90-minute match duration), which is longer than the average duration of 8.0 minutes per match during which their opponents were in the lead in those matches.
Lead-defending ability (at home) In home matches, Arsenal have taken the lead 18 times and have conceded an equalizer on 3 occasions, translating into a home lead-defending rate of 83% (for an opponents' equalizing rate of 17%).
Equalizing ability (at home) Of the 5 times that Arsenal's opponents have taken the lead when Arsenal were playing at home, Arsenal have managed to score an equalizer on 3 occasions, translating into a home equalizing rate of 60%.
In this example, Arsenal have been in the lead for an average duration of 33.6 minutes per match played away (based on a 90-minute match duration), which is longer than the average duration of 7.1 minutes per match during which their opponents were in the lead in those matches.
Lead-defending ability (away) In away matches, Arsenal have taken the lead 15 times and have conceded an equalizer on 4 occasions, translating into an away lead-defending rate of 73% (for an opponents' equalizing rate of 27%).
Equalizing ability (away) Of the 9 times that Arsenal's opponents have taken the lead when Arsenal were playing away, Arsenal have managed to score an equalizer on 6 occasions, translating into an away equalizing rate of 67%.
Arsenal stats rank the team in 1st position in the Premier League table with 85 points, 7 points above Manchester City.

In this example, Newcastle United have been in the lead for an average duration of 25.7 minutes per match (based on a 90-minute match duration), which is longer than the average duration of 20.3 minutes per match during which their opponents were in the lead in those matches.
Lead-defending ability Newcastle United have taken the lead 29 times and have conceded an equalizer on 15 instances, translating into a lead-defending rate of 48% (for an opponents' equalizing rate of 52%).

In this example, Newcastle Utd have been in the lead for an average duration of 30.0 minutes per match played at home (based on a 90-minute match duration), which is longer than the average duration of 15.6 minutes per match during which their opponents were in the lead in those matches.
Lead-defending ability (at home) In home matches, Newcastle Utd have taken the lead 19 times and have conceded an equalizer on 9 occasions, translating into a home lead-defending rate of 53% (for an opponents' equalizing rate of 47%).

In this example, Newcastle Utd have been in the lead for an average duration of 21.4 minutes per match played away (based on a 90-minute match duration), which is lower than the average duration of 25.1 minutes per match during which their opponents were in the lead in those matches.
