Team performance analysis

A few examples of team performance indicators

Given the sheer volume and variety of statistical data, it's often hard to form a clear picture of a team's performance trends.

This website aims to simplify analysis by providing focused tools and key performance indicators.

Below are a few examples of the types of statistical indicators featured on SoccerSTATS.com.

Points Performance Index

The Points Performance Index (PPI) quantifies the quality of points a team has accumulated. It's calculated for each team by multiplying their Points Per Game (PPG) by the average PPG of the opponents they have already played. This accounts for the "difficulty level" of their schedule.

Calculation
Points Performance Index = Team PPG x played opponents PPG

Purpose
To differentiate between teams with the same total points but varying strengths of opposition faced. For example, winning three matches against top teams yields a higher PPI than winning three matches against weaker opponents.

Performance Rating

The Performance Rating is similar to the Points Performance Index but utilizes a different point system. It's based on a team's "Performance Points Per Game" (pPPG, expressed in percentage) and the pPPG of their past opponents. In this system, a win is awarded 1 point, a draw 0.5 points, and a defeat 0 point.

Calculation
Performance Rating = (Team pPPG + Played Opponents' pPPG) / 2

Purpose
To assess performance while factoring in opponent difficulty, using a simplified scoring method that highlights outcomes more directly.

Relative Form

Unlike a basic "form table" that might only consider recent matches (e.g., the last 8), the Relative Form table provides a more nuanced view of a team's recent performance. It compares a team's PPG over their last 8 matches to their overall season average PPG.

Calculation
Relative Form = PPG (last 8 matches) vs. PPG (all matches)

Purpose
To identify teams that are currently performing "better than usual" or "worse than usual" relative to their own seasonal trend, rather than just against other teams.

Run-in analysis

The Run-in Analysis table becomes increasingly interesting to look at towards the end of a season. For each team, it compares the PPG of their already-played opponents with the PPG of their remaining opponents.

Calculation
Run-in = Played Opponents' PPG vs. Remaining Opponents' PPG

Purpose
To reveal which teams have faced, or are yet to face, a more challenging or easier set of opponents.

Projected Points

Building on the Run-in Analysis, the Projected Points table simulates a team's potential points tally from their remaining fixtures.

It considers the difference in PPG between a team's past and future opponents. A positive difference (stronger past opponents) results in a ratio greater than 1, while a negative difference (weaker past opponents) yields a ratio less than 1.

This ratio is then applied to the team's current PPG to derive a "Projected PPG".

Finally, Projected Points are calculated by multiplying this Projected PPG by the number of remaining matches.

Calculation
Projected Points = Team Current PPG x (Played Opponents' PPG / Remaining Opponents' PPG) x Number of Remaining Matches

Purpose
To simulate a team's potential projected points tally by adjusting their current performance for the assumed difficulty of their remaining schedule.

Points Won / Lost after the 75th minute

This metric highlights a team's observed ability to influence match outcomes in the dying minutes. It focuses on matches where the final outcome (not just the score) differs from the situation at the 75th minute (for example when a team was winning at the 75th minute and the match ended in a draw or a win for the other team).

Calculation
Points Won/Lost after the 75th minute = Points Won (after the 75th min) - Points Lost (after the 75th min)

Purpose
To identify teams that frequently win or lose points due to late goals. For example, if a team is losing 0-1 after 75 minutes but draws 1-1 in the end, they "win" 1 point (from 0 to 1), and their opponent "loses" 2 points (from 3 to 1).

Domination Index

The Domination Index is a match-level indicator that assesses a team's overall control during a game. It averages three key percentages: possession, corners awarded, and duration of time spent in the lead.

Calculation
Domination Index = (Team %Possession + Team %Corners + Team %Lead Duration) / 3

Purpose
To provide a holistic view of match dominance, moving beyond just possession. It acknowledges that a team leading comfortably might focus on control rather than relentless attack, which is still a form of domination.

Outcome Surprise-Level

The Outcome Surprise-Level evaluates how unexpected a match outcome was, ranging from 0 (least surprising) to 100 (most surprising). It's calculated based on each team's pre-match PPG (home PPG for the home team, away PPG for the visitor) and the final match outcome (home win, draw, or away win), irrespective of the scoreline.

Calculation (matches ending with a winner, pre-match PPG values)
Domination Index = (Losing team PPG / total PPG for both teams) x 100

Calculation (matches ending in a draw, pre-match PPG values)
Domination Index = (Difference between both teams' PPG values / total PPG for both teams) x 100

Purpose
To quantify the degree of upset in a given result based solely on the teams' prior points per game.

Identifying differences in performance between two evenly ranked teams

Consider two mid-table teams, Team A and Team B, with the same number of points. While they appear equally strong on a basic league table, utilizing the advanced metrics presented above can reveal significant underlying differences in their performances:

  • Points Performance Index
One team might have earned their points against tougher opposition.

  • Relative Form
One team could be in a period of exceptional (or poor) recent form compared to their season average.

  • Run-in Analysis
Their remaining schedules might be vastly different in terms of difficulty.

  • Projected Points
Their projected final points could diverge significantly due to their respective run-ins.

  • Points Won/Lost After 75th Minute
One team might consistently secure or concede late goals, indicating a difference in resilience or focus.

  • Domination Index
Even in draws or narrow wins, one team might consistently exhibit greater control over matches.

Beyond standard league standings, this website offers a suite of advanced metrics and statistical indicators to reveal some of the unique performance characteristics of each team. Even when two teams share the same number of points, these tools can uncover significant differences, such as:

  • Recent Form Divergence
Team A might be in a sharp decline, having lost their last four games, while Team B is making a remarkable comeback from the bottom of the table.

  • Historical Performance Trends
Team A could be performing 15 points below their typical average at this stage of the season over the last five years, whereas Team B is maintaining a consistent pace with their previous season's performance.

  • Home vs. Away Strength
Team B might be an away game specialist, earning 70% of their points on the road so far this season.

  • Early Defensive Dominance
Team A could be a first-half powerhouse, topping the first-half table with only one goal conceded before halftime.

  • Late Game Prowess
Team B might be a slow starter offensively, typically scoring 40% of their goals in the final 15 minutes of matches.

  • Resilience and Comebacks
Team B often concedes the first goal but boasts an impressive 80% equalizing rate.

  • Leading from the Front
Team A demonstrates a strong ability to hold a lead, with a 90% lead-defending rate and spending an average of 40% of match duration in front.

  • The goal is to provide a comprehensive set of tables, dashboards, and analytical tools that go beyond basic statistics. These resources help analyze how each team is performing in the league, uncovering some of their unique strengths, weaknesses, and overall performance against the league average.
