Points Performance Index

SoccerSTATS.com - updated on: 28 Mar 2025

Purpose

The Points Performance Index table aims to provide a more nuanced evaluation of team performance beyond basic indicators like total points and Points Per Game. It does this by accounting for the perceived difficulty or ease of each team's matches played so far.

The resulting Points Performance Index (PPI) value is calculated for each team, considering both their Points Per Game and an assessment of their opponents' Points Per Game.

For additional context regarding this table, you might find it helpful to read our page on Evaluating team performance.

Overview

The table ranks teams by points and displays the following for each team:

  • Games Played
  • Points
  • Points Per Game
  • Opponents Points Per Game
  • Points Performance Index

Here's a glimpse of some columns from the Relative Performance table:

Calculations

Points Per Game (PPG)

This value is determined by dividing the total points a team has accumulated by the number of matches they've played.

Opponents Points Per Game

The Opponents PPG value is calculated by combining the Away Points Per Game of opponents played at home with the Home PPG of opponents played away. You can view the specific PPG value for each opponent by hovering your mouse cursor over any Opponents PPG value in the table.

Points Performance Index

This value is calculated by multiplying a team's PPG by the PPG of their played opponents.

The Points Performance Index (PPI) aims to provide an understanding of a team's performance in terms of results, by incorporating an estimation of how "easy" or "difficult" the points earned by the team might have been. To gauge this "difficulty level," the PPI uses the Points Per Game of the opponents the team has already faced.

It's important to note that a higher PPI doesn't necessarily indicate superior inherent strength. It simply includes an estimation of the opposition's strength in the equation, rather than solely focusing on total points or Points Per Game.

Example

You can find an example on the Points Performance Index page for the Bundesliga.

Important Considerations

The calculation of the Points Performance Index gives equal weight to both the team's PPG and the Opponents PPG. The concept is to apply a "weight" to a team's PPG, thereby factoring in the caliber of opposition against which the team's points were acquired.

However, early in the season, PPG values can be significantly higher or lower than they become as the season progresses. This can lead to the PPI calculation, based on PPG averages, utilizing more extreme values at the season's outset. The more matches that have been played, the more meaningful the PPG values will become.

Related Statistics

In addition to the PPI, another statistical table that uses opponents' PPG is the Run-in analysis table, which is also discussed in Evaluating matches difficulty-level.
