The Premier League returned with a bang at Anfield, as Liverpool survived an almighty scare to kickstart their title defence with a chaotic and thrilling 4-2 victory over a courageous Bournemouth, thanks to a dramatic late flurry of goals.
The season opener carried immense weight for both sides. For Arne Slot's Liverpool, the mission was to make an immediate statement of intent and banish the disappointment of their Community Shield penalty shootout loss.
Bournemouth, fresh from a solid 9th place finish last term, travelled to Merseyside viewing this as the ultimate test of their progress, hoping a resilient performance would set the tone for their campaign.
The champions looked to be cruising after taking a two-goal lead. New signing Hugo Ekitiké opened his account on 37 minutes, bundling the ball home from close range after a defensive mix-up (1-0). Just after the break, Cody Gakpo doubled the advantage with a superb individual effort, cutting inside and drilling a low shot into the corner (2-0).
But Bournemouth roared back in stunning fashion. A swift counter-attack was finished off by Antoine Semenyo to halve the deficit (2-1). Then, just twelve minutes later, Antoine Semenyo struck again, bursting through the heart of the defence on another counter to level the scores and silence the home crowd (2-2).
With the game on a knife-edge, Federico Chiesa, on for just a few minutes, fired his side back in front from a central position inside the box in the 88th minute (3-2). The points were finally secured in the 90th minute when Mohamed Salah weaved his magic, cutting in from the left to slot home a trademark finish (4-2).
For Liverpool, this was a case of finding a way to win, showcasing a champion's resolve when it mattered most. While letting a two-goal lead slip will be a major point of discussion for the coaching staff, the character shown to score two late goals gets their title defence off to a winning start and keeps their formidable Anfield record intact. They ultimately overcame the setback and found their rhythm when it counted.
Bournemouth will leave Merseyside with a feeling of profound disappointment but also pride. They went toe-to-toe with the champions and their valiant effort confirmed the pre-match notion of their incredible resilience on the road.
To come back from 2-0 down at Anfield is a huge achievement, and although the late collapse was heartbreaking, Andoni Iraola's side can take huge confidence from a performance that suggests they will trouble many teams this season.
To calculate the above duration values based on a total of 90 minutes, goals scored on the 45th minute and during added time of the first half are considered scored on the 45th minute, and goals scored on the 90th minute and during added time of the second half are considered scored on the 90th minute.

How is the Domination Index calculated?
⌄
The Domination Index calculation is based on the average of the following percentages:
- Possession percentage - Percentage of match corners awarded to each team - Percentage of time each team has been in the lead
'Domination' in football can be perceived in different ways. The goal of the Domination Index, as calculated here, is not about trying to determine things like 'who should have won' or which team has been simply attacking the most.
Sometimes a team has easily scored once or twice in the beginning of the game and then opts for a more reactive stance, with a focus on hindering the opponent's game. At the end of the match, the opponent might have had more possession, and even more shots, but that does not necessarily mean they have dominated the other team.
Considering possession as only one of the factors, which also include corners (clearly indicating a form of pressure on the opponent's defence), and how much of the 90-minute match duration each team has been leading, allows to also account for when teams have simply been busy controling the game, without needing to attack a lot.
Note: in the table above, to allow for averaging duration values based on a total of 90 minutes per game, goals scored on the 45th minute and during added time of the first half are all considered to be scored on the 45th minute, and goals scored on the 90th minute and during added time of the second half are also considered scored on the 90th minute.
In this example, Liverpool have been in the lead for an average duration of 41.0 minutes per match (based on a 90-minute match duration), which is longer than the average duration of 0.0 minutes per match during which their opponents were in the lead in those matches.
Non-crucial goals scored: goals scored that increased an existing lead, or decreased the opponent's existing lead.
Non-crucial goals conceded: goals conceded that decreased an existing lead, or increased the opponent's existing lead.
Note regarding the Goals giving the lead and the goals giving lead to opponent values: both the team and the opponent team might take the lead more than once during a single match,
so the total number of goals giving the lead to a team might be higher than the number of matches played by the team.
Lead-defending ability Liverpool have taken the lead 2 times and have conceded an equalizer on 1 occasion, translating into a lead-defending rate of 50% (for an opponents' equalizing rate of 50%).
In this example, Liverpool have been in the lead for an average duration of 41.0 minutes per match played at home (based on a 90-minute match duration), which is longer than the average duration of 0.0 minutes per match during which their opponents were in the lead in those matches.
Lead-defending ability (at home) In home matches, Liverpool have taken the lead 2 times and have conceded an equalizer on 1 occasion, translating into a home lead-defending rate of 50% (for an opponents' equalizing rate of 50%).
In this example, Liverpool have been in the lead for an average duration of 0.0 minutes per match played away (based on a 90-minute match duration), which is level with the average duration of 0.0 minutes per match during which their opponents were in the lead in those matches.

The Segments Table is a visual representation splitting the teams into 5 segments. Each team is assigned to a specific segment, depending on the team's number of points. Each of the 5 segments spans one-fifth (20%) of the total points held by the team ranked 1st in the league. For each team, the number of matches played appears in green between brackets, and the number of points is displayed in black.
More statistics tables can be accessed from the 'Statistics' dropdown list on the league navigation menu.
