In an absolutely breathtaking Allsvenskan thriller that will be talked about for weeks, Elfsborg orchestrated a stunning late comeback, scoring twice in the 90th minute to snatch a sensational 4-3 victory from the clutches of a devastated IFK Goteborg.
The stage was set for a tense derby, with both clubs harbouring European aspirations. Elfsborg entered the match aiming to halt a recent dip in form and re-establish their authority on home soil against a direct rival.
IFK Goteborg, conversely, arrived at the Boras Arena as one of the league's form teams, looking to continue their impressive surge up the table with a statement win on the road.
The match exploded into life from the outset, with the visitors racing into an early lead. Tobias Heintz opened the scoring after just four minutes (0-1), and ten minutes later, Max Fenger doubled the advantage, silencing the home crowd (0-2).
Elfsborg responded quickly, with Rasmus Wikström pulling a goal back in the 19th minute (1-2), but the frantic pace continued as S. Moubarak almost immediately restored Goteborg's two-goal cushion just a minute later (1-3).
The game seemed to be slipping away from the hosts, but they were handed a lifeline just after the hour mark when an unfortunate own goal from August Erlingmark cut the deficit (2-3), setting up a grandstand finish. Then, as the clock ticked into the 90th minute, the unthinkable happened. J. Larsson drew Elfsborg level with a crucial equaliser (3-3), before sending the home fans into delirium by scoring again moments later to complete the incredible turnaround and seal a famous victory (4-3).
For Elfsborg, this spectacular victory provides a massive morale boost and brings a halt to their recent slump, showcasing immense character. The result further cements their status as having a formidable home attack, as they lead the league in goals scored at home, but it also papers over the cracks of their defensive fragility, having now conceded two or more goals in their last three home matches, with most of those goals coming in the first half. They will look to build on this incredible momentum when they travel to face Hacken.
This result is a truly devastating blow for IFK Goteborg, who will be wondering how they let a two-goal lead slip. The loss is made all the more bitter as it continues a painful trend of narrow defeats, with six of their eight losses this season being by a single goal.
While their attack is clearly firing, as illustrated by their improved goal-scoring rate, their inability to see out the game from a winning position will be a major concern as they prepare to host Degerfors, where they must regroup from this heartbreaking derby defeat.
4th consecutive game where IFK Goteborg scored. 2nd consecutive away game where IFK Goteborg scored. 4th consecutive game where Elfsborg conceded. 3rd consecutive home game where Elfsborg conceded.
To calculate the above duration values based on a total of 90 minutes, goals scored on the 45th minute and during added time of the first half are considered scored on the 45th minute, and goals scored on the 90th minute and during added time of the second half are considered scored on the 90th minute.
