Arsenal secured a crucial 1-0 victory over direct competitors Newcastle United, with Declan Rice's second-half strike confirming their spot in the Champions League for next season.
Coming into the match, Newcastle, sitting in a strong third position, had hoped a win would see them leapfrog Arsenal and solidify their grip on a coveted Champions League spot, despite having already secured a Europa Conference League berth.
Arsenal, in second, had also secured European football but were keen to maintain their higher league standing as they chased a top-five finish, though the title itself was out of reach. The Gunners were just two points clear of their guests, with Chelsea and Aston Villa also close behind.
In the first half, Newcastle created a few clear-cut chances, but Arsenal goalkeeper Raya made brilliant saves to deny the Magpies the opener.
The Gunners were then able to apply more pressure in the second half, which saw them score the decisive goal. On the 55th minute, Bukayo Saka latched onto a ball on the right flank, connecting with Martin Ødegaard who cut it back low for Declan Rice on the edge of the box. From a central position, Rice’s first-time strike was precise and found the opposite lower corner of the net (1-0).
The Gunners then resolved to containing Newcastle’s pressure for an equaliser in the latter parts of the game, attempting to make the most of a few counter-attack opportunities in the meantime, but no further goal was scored.
For Arsenal, this win ended a three-match winless streak in the Premier League. More importantly, it confirmed their qualification for Europe's elite club competition and significantly boosted their chances of retaining the runner-up position in the league table.
For Newcastle, the defeat represented a significant missed opportunity to secure their Champions League participation. They now find themselves level on points with Chelsea and Aston Villa, just one point above Manchester City (who have a game in hand) and Nottingham Forest. This leaves them facing a tense final matchday in the tight race for the remaining Champions League spots.
Arsenal will now be looking to finish the season strongly, aiming to consolidate their second-place position and carry winning momentum into the next campaign. Newcastle, however, will need to quickly regroup and focus all their energy on their final fixture, knowing they must strive for a positive result to secure their desired Champions League qualification amidst intense competition.
To calculate the above duration values based on a total of 90 minutes, goals scored on the 45th minute and during added time of the first half are considered scored on the 45th minute, and goals scored on the 90th minute and during added time of the second half are considered scored on the 90th minute.

How is the Domination Index calculated?
⌄
The Domination Index calculation is based on the average of the following percentages:
- Possession percentage - Percentage of match corners awarded to each team - Percentage of time each team has been in the lead
'Domination' in football can be perceived in different ways. The goal of the Domination Index, as calculated here, is not about trying to determine things like 'who should have won' or which team has been simply attacking the most.
Sometimes a team has easily scored once or twice in the beginning of the game and then opts for a more reactive stance, with a focus on hindering the opponent's game. At the end of the match, the opponent might have had more possession, and even more shots, but that does not necessarily mean they have dominated the other team.
Considering possession as only one of the factors, which also include corners (clearly indicating a form of pressure on the opponent's defence), and how much of the 90-minute match duration each team has been leading, allows to also account for when teams have simply been busy controling the game, without needing to attack a lot.

The 'League average' indicator refers to the average value for all teams in the league since the beginning of the season.
Note: in the table above, to allow for averaging duration values based on a total of 90 minutes per game, goals scored on the 45th minute and during added time of the first half are all considered to be scored on the 45th minute, and goals scored on the 90th minute and during added time of the second half are also considered scored on the 90th minute.
In this example, Arsenal have been in the lead for an average duration of 34.5 minutes per match (based on a 90-minute match duration), which is longer than the average duration of 8.8 minutes per match during which their opponents were in the lead in those matches.
Non-crucial goals scored: goals scored that increased an existing lead, or decreased the opponent's existing lead.
Non-crucial goals conceded: goals conceded that decreased an existing lead, or increased the opponent's existing lead.
Note regarding the Goals giving the lead and the Goals giving the lead to the opponent values: both the team and the opponent team might take the lead more than once during a single match,
so the total number of goals giving the lead to a team might be higher than the number of matches played by the team.
Lead-defending ability Arsenal have taken the lead 34 times and have conceded an equalizer on 15 instances, translating into a lead-defending rate of 56% (for an opponents' equalizing rate of 44%).
Equalizing ability Of the 11 times that Arsenal's opponents have taken the lead, Arsenal have managed to score an equalizer on 7 instances, translating into an equalizing rate of 64%.
In this example, Arsenal have been in the lead for an average duration of 42.6 minutes per match played at home (based on a 90-minute match duration), which is longer than the average duration of 4.2 minutes per match during which their opponents were in the lead in those matches.
Lead-defending ability (at home) In home matches, Arsenal have taken the lead 21 times and have conceded an equalizer on 10 occasions, translating into a home lead-defending rate of 52% (for an opponents' equalizing rate of 48%).
Equalizing ability (at home) Of the 4 times that Arsenal's opponents have taken the lead when Arsenal were playing at home, Arsenal have managed to score an equalizer on 2 occasions, translating into a home equalizing rate of 50%.
In this example, Arsenal have been in the lead for an average duration of 25.9 minutes per match played away (based on a 90-minute match duration), which is longer than the average duration of 13.7 minutes per match during which their opponents were in the lead in those matches.
Lead-defending ability (away) In away matches, Arsenal have taken the lead 13 times and have conceded an equalizer on 5 occasions, translating into an away lead-defending rate of 62% (for an opponents' equalizing rate of 38%).
Equalizing ability (away) Of the 7 times that Arsenal's opponents have taken the lead when Arsenal were playing away, Arsenal have managed to score an equalizer on 5 occasions, translating into an away equalizing rate of 71%.
Arsenal stats rank the team in 2nd position in the Premier League table with 71 points, 12 points behind Liverpool and 5 points above Newcastle Utd.

In this example, Newcastle United have been in the lead for an average duration of 33.4 minutes per match (based on a 90-minute match duration), which is longer than the average duration of 23.1 minutes per match during which their opponents were in the lead in those matches.
Lead-defending ability Newcastle United have taken the lead 27 times and have conceded an equalizer on 7 instances, translating into a lead-defending rate of 74% (for an opponents' equalizing rate of 26%).
Equalizing ability Of the 25 times that Newcastle Utd's opponents have taken the lead, Newcastle Utd have managed to score an equalizer on 14 instances, translating into an equalizing rate of 56%.
In this example, Newcastle Utd have been in the lead for an average duration of 42.7 minutes per match played at home (based on a 90-minute match duration), which is longer than the average duration of 14.2 minutes per match during which their opponents were in the lead in those matches.
Lead-defending ability (at home) In home matches, Newcastle Utd have taken the lead 18 times and have conceded an equalizer on 6 occasions, translating into a home lead-defending rate of 67% (for an opponents' equalizing rate of 33%).
Equalizing ability (at home) Of the 8 times that Newcastle Utd's opponents have taken the lead when Newcastle Utd were playing at home, Newcastle Utd have managed to score an equalizer on 4 occasions, translating into a home equalizing rate of 50%.
In this example, Newcastle Utd have been in the lead for an average duration of 24.6 minutes per match played away (based on a 90-minute match duration), which is lower than the average duration of 31.6 minutes per match during which their opponents were in the lead in those matches.
Lead-defending ability (away) In away matches, Newcastle Utd have taken the lead 9 times and have conceded an equalizer on 1 occasion, translating into an away lead-defending rate of 89% (for an opponents' equalizing rate of 11%).
Equalizing ability (away) Of the 17 times that Newcastle Utd's opponents have taken the lead when Newcastle Utd were playing away, Newcastle Utd have managed to score an equalizer on 10 occasions, translating into an away equalizing rate of 59%.
