Friday nights under the lights at The Hawthorns are supposed to be special, but for West Brom, this one turned into a cruel lesson in the fine margins of Championship football as they fell to a heart-breaking 3-2 defeat against Middlesbrough.
A rollercoaster of a match ended in despair for the hosts, as a dramatic late goal ensured the high-flying visitors would leave with all three points.
It was an encounter that oscillated between moments of tactical discipline and pure, chaotic brilliance, ultimately reinforcing the diverging fortunes of these two sides as the promotion race heats up.
The Baggies entered the fray desperate to snap a three-match losing streak and find some much-needed stability to avoid being dragged further into a relegation dogfight, knowing their home turf remained their strongest chance of survival.
For Middlesbrough, the mission was simple: keep the pressure on the league leaders and solidify their claim for an automatic promotion spot by continuing a clinical run of form that has made them one of the most feared sides in the division.
Despite a resilient start from the home side, the deadlock was broken just before half-time in unfortunate circumstances when Charlie Taylor inadvertently turned the ball into his own net (0-1).
The visitors looked to have seized complete control in the 58th minute when Sam Silvera doubled the lead, seemingly putting the game out of reach (0-2).
Middlesbroughs incredible record of winning every match when scoring first this season appeared set to continue, but West Brom produced a spirited response as Isaac Price gave them hope with a well-taken goal in the 75th minute (1-2).
The atmosphere reached fever pitch when Jed Wallace found the equaliser just five minutes later, defying the team's usual struggles with comebacks (2-2).
However, just as the clock hit ninety, Delano Burgzorg found a pocket of space in the box to fire home a dramatic winner, silencing the home crowd and snatching the victory (2-3).
This result marks a devastating third consecutive defeat for West Brom, further highlighting a recurring theme where 12 of their 14 defeats this season have been by a heart-breaking one-goal margin.
Sitting in 18th place, they will need to address a defensive line that has now failed to keep a clean sheet in 11 of their 14 home matches, as they turn their focus to a vital clash with Norwich City to stop the rot.
Middlesbrough, meanwhile, march on with their second win in a row, remaining firmly in 2nd place and proving their remarkable ability to find a way to win even when their lead is threatened.
While they will be thrilled to have won all 14 matches where they scored first this season, they must address a defensive vulnerability that has seen them go an eighth consecutive away match without a clean sheet.
This result did not help improve their clean sheet rate (now at 26%), but their potent offence, which has now found the net 40 times, continues to be the engine driving their charge toward the top flight.
3rd consecutive defeat for West Brom. 2nd consecutive win for Middlesbrough. 2nd consecutive game where West Brom scored. 7th consecutive home game where West Brom scored. 8th consecutive away game where Middlesbrough conceded. 2nd consecutive game where Middlesbrough scored. 6th consecutive game where West Brom conceded. 3rd consecutive home game where West Brom conceded.
To calculate the above duration values based on a total of 90 minutes, goals scored on the 45th minute and during added time of the first half are considered scored on the 45th minute, and goals scored on the 90th minute and during added time of the second half are considered scored on the 90th minute.

Domination Index calculation method
⌄
The Domination Index calculation is based on the average of the following percentages:
- Possession percentage - Percentage of match corners awarded to each team - Percentage of time each team has been in the lead
The calculation used is: AVERAGE OF (% Possession x 4, % Corners and % Lead duration x 2)
'Domination' in football can be perceived in different ways. The goal of the Domination Index, as calculated here, is not about trying to determine things like 'who should have won' or which team has been simply attacking the most.
Sometimes a team has easily scored once or twice in the beginning of the game and then opts for a more reactive stance, with a focus on hindering the opponent's game. At the end of the match, the opponent might have had more possession, and even more shots, but that does not necessarily mean they have dominated the other team.
Considering possession as only one of the factors, which also include corners (clearly indicating a form of pressure on the opponent's defence), and how much of the 90-minute match duration each team has been leading, allows to also account for when teams have simply been busy controling the game, without needing to attack a lot.

The 'League average' indicator refers to the average value for all teams in the league since the beginning of the season.
Note: in the table above, to allow for averaging duration values based on a total of 90 minutes per game, goals scored on the 45th minute and during added time of the first half are all considered to be scored on the 45th minute, and goals scored on the 90th minute and during added time of the second half are also considered scored on the 90th minute.
In this example, West Bromwich Albion have been in the lead for an average duration of 22.4 minutes per match (based on a 90-minute match duration), which is longer than the average duration of 22.2 minutes per match during which their opponents were in the lead in those matches.
Non-crucial goals scored: goals scored that increased an existing lead, or decreased the opponent's existing lead.
Non-crucial goals conceded: goals conceded that decreased an existing lead, or increased the opponent's existing lead.
Note regarding the Goals giving the lead and the goals giving lead to opponent values: both the team and the opponent team might take the lead more than once during a single match,
so the total number of goals giving the lead to a team might be higher than the number of matches played by the team.
Lead-defending ability West Bromwich Albion have taken the lead 23 times and have conceded an equalizer on 10 instances, translating into a lead-defending rate of 57% (for an opponents' equalizing rate of 43%).
Equalizing ability Of the 25 times that West Brom's opponents have taken the lead, West Brom have managed to score an equalizer on 6 instances, translating into an equalizing rate of 24%.
In this example, West Brom have been in the lead for an average duration of 28.4 minutes per match played at home (based on a 90-minute match duration), which is longer than the average duration of 14.9 minutes per match during which their opponents were in the lead in those matches.
Lead-defending ability (at home) In home matches, West Brom have taken the lead 15 times and have conceded an equalizer on 7 occasions, translating into a home lead-defending rate of 53% (for an opponents' equalizing rate of 47%).
Equalizing ability (at home) Of the 8 times that West Brom's opponents have taken the lead when West Brom were playing at home, West Brom have managed to score an equalizer on 3 occasions, translating into a home equalizing rate of 38%.
In this example, West Brom have been in the lead for an average duration of 16.4 minutes per match played away (based on a 90-minute match duration), which is lower than the average duration of 29.6 minutes per match during which their opponents were in the lead in those matches.
Lead-defending ability (away) In away matches, West Brom have taken the lead 8 times and have conceded an equalizer on 3 occasions, translating into an away lead-defending rate of 62% (for an opponents' equalizing rate of 38%).
Equalizing ability (away) Of the 17 times that West Brom's opponents have taken the lead when West Brom were playing away, West Brom have managed to score an equalizer on 3 occasions, translating into an away equalizing rate of 18%.
West Brom stats rank the team in 21th position in the Championship table with 51 points, 1 point behind Blackburn and 4 points above Oxford Utd.

In this example, Middlesbrough have been in the lead for an average duration of 29.7 minutes per match (based on a 90-minute match duration), which is longer than the average duration of 18.2 minutes per match during which their opponents were in the lead in those matches.
Lead-defending ability Middlesbrough have taken the lead 30 times and have conceded an equalizer on 8 instances, translating into a lead-defending rate of 73% (for an opponents' equalizing rate of 27%).
Equalizing ability Of the 22 times that Middlesbrough's opponents have taken the lead, Middlesbrough have managed to score an equalizer on 12 instances, translating into an equalizing rate of 55%.
In this example, Middlesbrough have been in the lead for an average duration of 30.7 minutes per match played at home (based on a 90-minute match duration), which is longer than the average duration of 14.3 minutes per match during which their opponents were in the lead in those matches.
Lead-defending ability (at home) In home matches, Middlesbrough have taken the lead 15 times and have conceded an equalizer on 3 occasions, translating into a home lead-defending rate of 80% (for an opponents' equalizing rate of 20%).
Equalizing ability (at home) Of the 9 times that Middlesbrough's opponents have taken the lead when Middlesbrough were playing at home, Middlesbrough have managed to score an equalizer on 4 occasions, translating into a home equalizing rate of 44%.
In this example, Middlesbrough have been in the lead for an average duration of 28.6 minutes per match played away (based on a 90-minute match duration), which is longer than the average duration of 22.1 minutes per match during which their opponents were in the lead in those matches.
Lead-defending ability (away) In away matches, Middlesbrough have taken the lead 15 times and have conceded an equalizer on 5 occasions, translating into an away lead-defending rate of 67% (for an opponents' equalizing rate of 33%).
Equalizing ability (away) Of the 13 times that Middlesbrough's opponents have taken the lead when Middlesbrough were playing away, Middlesbrough have managed to score an equalizer on 8 occasions, translating into an away equalizing rate of 62%.
