Performance Rating

Purpose

The Performance Rating table aims to assess team performance by:

- utilizing a different point system than the typical 3-1-0 system (which awards 3 points for a win, 1 for a draw, and 0 for a loss)

- considering the performance values calculated for the team's opponents

Overview

The table ranks teams by points and displays the following for each team:

• Games Played
• Wins
• Draws
• Losses
• Points
• Performance Points (pPts)
• Team Performance Points Per Game (pPPG)
• Opponents Performance Points Per Game
• Performance Rating

Below is a glimpse of some columns from the Performance Rating table:

Methodology

Performance Points (pPts)

The point system used for these calculations is called Performance Points. This system is based on:

- 1 point for a win

- 0.5 point for a draw

- 0 points for a loss

Performance Points Per Game (pPPG)

The Opponents pPPG value is calculated from the combined Away Performance Points Per Game of opponents played at home and the Home pPPG of opponents played away.

Performance Rating

The Performance Rating is the average of the team's pPPG and the pPPG of their played opponents.

Important Considerations

The Performance Rating calculation gives equal importance to both the team's pPPG and the Opponents pPPG. The intent is to "weight" a team's pPPG, accounting for the caliber of opposition against which the team's Performance Points were earned.

However, in the early stages of a season, pPPG values can fluctuate significantly. This means calculations based on pPPG averages might use more extreme values at the beginning of the season. As more matches are played, the pPPG values become increasingly meaningful.
