Sometimes its just about getting the job done, and thats exactly what Manchester City did on a cold Saturday afternoon at the Etihad Stadium.
Pep Guardiolas men knew that anything less than three points could see the gap to Arsenal widen at the top of the table, while Wolverhampton arrived with the desperate hope of turning their season around after a mini-revival had stalled in recent weeks.
The pressure was mounting on the champions following four league games without a victory, making this home fixture a non-negotiable must-win to stay in the hunt for yet another trophy.
For the visitors, the mission was one of pure survival as they sought to climb out of the relegation mire and prove that their recent four-match unbeaten streak was no fluke, even as they remain anchored to the foot of the table.
The breakthrough came after just six minutes when Matheus Nunes, showing great intent on the right wing, delivered a perfectly weighted cross into the danger zone. Omar Marmoush reacted fastest to the delivery, darting between the defenders to slot home from close range and ensure his side scored the opening goal for the eighteenth time this season (1-0).
Wolves, who have now conceded first in 18 matches, struggled to find any rhythm and failed to register a goal for the second consecutive league outing.
The contest was effectively put to bed in stoppage time before the break when Bernardo Silva spotted Antoine Semenyo in space on the right side of the box. Semenyo displayed excellent footwork to cut inside his marker and unleash a powerful drive into the opposite corner (2-0).
This clinical performance saw City extend their undefeated home run to eleven matches, providing a much-needed boost after a rare stumble in league form. With 46 points, they remain the leagues most potent attack and sit in second place, keeping the heat on the leaders as they prepare for a high-stakes trip to North London to face Tottenham next.
Conversely, Wolves travel woes continued as they recorded their twelfth consecutive away match without a clean sheet, a statistic that perfectly encapsulates their defensive struggles this term.
They remain rooted to the bottom of the table with just eight points and must now find a way to spark their attack into life when they host Bournemouth next weekend.
11th consecutive home game where Manchester City scored. 12th consecutive away game where Wolverhampton conceded. 2nd consecutive game with no goal scored for Wolverhampton.
To calculate the above duration values based on a total of 90 minutes, goals scored on the 45th minute and during added time of the first half are considered scored on the 45th minute, and goals scored on the 90th minute and during added time of the second half are considered scored on the 90th minute.

Domination Index calculation method
⌄
The Domination Index calculation is based on the average of the following percentages:
- Possession percentage - Percentage of match corners awarded to each team - Percentage of time each team has been in the lead
The calculation used is: AVERAGE OF (% Possession x 4, % Corners and % Lead duration x 2)
'Domination' in football can be perceived in different ways. The goal of the Domination Index, as calculated here, is not about trying to determine things like 'who should have won' or which team has been simply attacking the most.
Sometimes a team has easily scored once or twice in the beginning of the game and then opts for a more reactive stance, with a focus on hindering the opponent's game. At the end of the match, the opponent might have had more possession, and even more shots, but that does not necessarily mean they have dominated the other team.
Considering possession as only one of the factors, which also include corners (clearly indicating a form of pressure on the opponent's defence), and how much of the 90-minute match duration each team has been leading, allows to also account for when teams have simply been busy controling the game, without needing to attack a lot.

The 'League average' indicator refers to the average value for all teams in the league since the beginning of the season.
Note: in the table above, to allow for averaging duration values based on a total of 90 minutes per game, goals scored on the 45th minute and during added time of the first half are all considered to be scored on the 45th minute, and goals scored on the 90th minute and during added time of the second half are also considered scored on the 90th minute.
In this example, Manchester City have been in the lead for an average duration of 45.5 minutes per match (based on a 90-minute match duration), which is longer than the average duration of 6.7 minutes per match during which their opponents were in the lead in those matches.
Non-crucial goals scored: goals scored that increased an existing lead, or decreased the opponent's existing lead.
Non-crucial goals conceded: goals conceded that decreased an existing lead, or increased the opponent's existing lead.
Note regarding the Goals giving the lead and the goals giving lead to opponent values: both the team and the opponent team might take the lead more than once during a single match,
so the total number of goals giving the lead to a team might be higher than the number of matches played by the team.
Lead-defending ability Manchester City have taken the lead 28 times and have conceded an equalizer on 10 instances, translating into a lead-defending rate of 64% (for an opponents' equalizing rate of 36%).
Equalizing ability Of the 7 times that Manchester City's opponents have taken the lead, Manchester City have managed to score an equalizer on 2 instances, translating into an equalizing rate of 29%.
In this example, Manchester City have been in the lead for an average duration of 56.0 minutes per match played at home (based on a 90-minute match duration), which is longer than the average duration of 3.9 minutes per match during which their opponents were in the lead in those matches.
Lead-defending ability (at home) In home matches, Manchester City have taken the lead 17 times and have conceded an equalizer on 6 occasions, translating into a home lead-defending rate of 65% (for an opponents' equalizing rate of 35%).
Equalizing ability (at home) Of the 1 time that Manchester City's opponents have taken the lead when Manchester City were playing at home, Manchester City have managed to score an equalizer on 0 occasions, translating into a home equalizing rate of 0%.
In this example, Manchester City have been in the lead for an average duration of 35.0 minutes per match played away (based on a 90-minute match duration), which is longer than the average duration of 9.4 minutes per match during which their opponents were in the lead in those matches.
Lead-defending ability (away) In away matches, Manchester City have taken the lead 11 times and have conceded an equalizer on 4 occasions, translating into an away lead-defending rate of 64% (for an opponents' equalizing rate of 36%).
Equalizing ability (away) Of the 6 times that Manchester City's opponents have taken the lead when Manchester City were playing away, Manchester City have managed to score an equalizer on 2 occasions, translating into an away equalizing rate of 33%.
Manchester City stats rank the team in 2nd position in the Premier League table with 59 points, 5 points behind Arsenal and 8 points above Manchester Utd.

In this example, Wolverhampton Wanderers have been in the lead for an average duration of 8.2 minutes per match (based on a 90-minute match duration), which is lower than the average duration of 39.5 minutes per match during which their opponents were in the lead in those matches.
Lead-defending ability Wolverhampton Wanderers have taken the lead 5 times and have conceded an equalizer on 3 instances, translating into a lead-defending rate of 40% (for an opponents' equalizing rate of 60%).
Equalizing ability Of the 27 times that Wolverhampton's opponents have taken the lead, Wolverhampton have managed to score an equalizer on 7 instances, translating into an equalizing rate of 26%.
In this example, Wolverhampton have been in the lead for an average duration of 13.5 minutes per match played at home (based on a 90-minute match duration), which is lower than the average duration of 37.3 minutes per match during which their opponents were in the lead in those matches.
Lead-defending ability (at home) In home matches, Wolverhampton have taken the lead 4 times and have conceded an equalizer on 2 occasions, translating into a home lead-defending rate of 50% (for an opponents' equalizing rate of 50%).
Equalizing ability (at home) Of the 14 times that Wolverhampton's opponents have taken the lead when Wolverhampton were playing at home, Wolverhampton have managed to score an equalizer on 4 occasions, translating into a home equalizing rate of 29%.
In this example, Wolverhampton have been in the lead for an average duration of 2.6 minutes per match played away (based on a 90-minute match duration), which is lower than the average duration of 41.9 minutes per match during which their opponents were in the lead in those matches.
Lead-defending ability (away) In away matches, Wolverhampton have taken the lead 1 time and have conceded an equalizer on 1 occasion, translating into an away lead-defending rate of 0% (for an opponents' equalizing rate of 100%).
Equalizing ability (away) Of the 13 times that Wolverhampton's opponents have taken the lead when Wolverhampton were playing away, Wolverhampton have managed to score an equalizer on 3 occasions, translating into an away equalizing rate of 23%.
