Sunderland dramatically grabbed a ticket to the Europa League on the final day of the season, overcoming Chelsea 2-1 in a high-stakes encounter at the Stadium of Light.
The Black Cats knew they were playing to secure a European spot, while the visitors aimed to salvage an inconsistent campaign and potentially snatch that very same continental prize.
The result brings immense joy to the home crowd, leaving Chelsea to reflect on a difficult season that ended in complete disappointment with a mid-table finish.
Before the opening whistle, Sunderland sat comfortably in mid-table but carried the burden of having failed to score in their last two home matches. Chelsea travelled with a high-ranking away unit and the confidence of leading the division's Offence Away table with 32 goals scored on the road.
However, as was apparent before the game, the Blues were plagued by ongoing defensive struggles, entering the match on a 15-match streak without a clean sheet, a vulnerability the hosts were desperate to exploit.
Sunderland opened the scoring in the 25th minute when a long clearance from the goalkeeper was flicked on with a header by the edge of the box, allowing Trai Hume to stretch a leg and volley the ball home at the near post (1-0).
Just five minutes after the interval, Enzo Le Fee drove to the right byline and cut a low pass back into the box; Brobbey got a touch, and the ball unluckily deflected off defender Malo Gusto into his own net (2-0).
Chelsea quickly responded in the 56th minute when Pedro Neto found Cole Palmer on the right flank, who cut inside and unleashed a powerful long-range shot into the bottom right corner (2-1).
The visitors' hopes of a comeback were severely damaged in the 62nd minute when Wesley Fofana received a second yellow card and was sent off.
Sunderland's magnificent final day triumph secured a 7th position finish in the Premier League table with 54 points, ensuring their entry into next season's Europa League.
The victory means the Black Cats ended their season on a 4-match unbeaten run, recording two consecutive wins in the process. Having completed their home campaign, they will focus on building on a solid defensive foundation that saw them maintain a high ranking in the Defence at Home table, despite failing to keep a clean sheet in 12 of their 19 home fixtures.
Chelsea's frustrating defeat condemned them to a 10th position finish with 52 points, missing out on European qualification. The loss extended their alarming defensive record to 16 consecutive league matches without a clean sheet, with 17 goals conceded in their last 8 league matches.
2nd consecutive win for Sunderland. 2nd consecutive game where Sunderland scored. 16th consecutive game where Chelsea conceded. 11th consecutive away game where Chelsea conceded. 4th consecutive game where Chelsea scored. 2nd consecutive away game where Chelsea scored. 2nd consecutive game where Sunderland conceded.
To calculate the above duration values based on a total of 90 minutes, goals scored on the 45th minute and during added time of the first half are considered scored on the 45th minute, and goals scored on the 90th minute and during added time of the second half are considered scored on the 90th minute.

Domination Index calculation method
⌄
The Domination Index calculation is based on the average of the following percentages:
- Possession percentage - Percentage of match corners awarded to each team - Percentage of time each team has been in the lead
The calculation used is: AVERAGE OF (% Possession x 4, % Corners and % Lead duration x 2)
'Domination' in football can be perceived in different ways. The goal of the Domination Index, as calculated here, is not about trying to determine things like 'who should have won' or which team has been simply attacking the most.
Sometimes a team has easily scored once or twice in the beginning of the game and then opts for a more reactive stance, with a focus on hindering the opponent's game. At the end of the match, the opponent might have had more possession, and even more shots, but that does not necessarily mean they have dominated the other team.
Considering possession as only one of the factors, which also include corners (clearly indicating a form of pressure on the opponent's defence), and how much of the 90-minute match duration each team has been leading, allows to also account for when teams have simply been busy controling the game, without needing to attack a lot.

Note: in the table above, to allow for averaging duration values based on a total of 90 minutes per game, goals scored on the 45th minute and during added time of the first half are all considered to be scored on the 45th minute, and goals scored on the 90th minute and during added time of the second half are also considered scored on the 90th minute.
In this example, Sunderland have been in the lead for an average duration of 15.2 minutes per match (based on a 90-minute match duration), which is lower than the average duration of 22.0 minutes per match during which their opponents were in the lead in those matches.
Non-crucial goals scored: goals scored that increased an existing lead, or decreased the opponent's existing lead.
Non-crucial goals conceded: goals conceded that decreased an existing lead, or increased the opponent's existing lead.
Note regarding the Goals giving the lead and the goals giving lead to opponent values: both the team and the opponent team might take the lead more than once during a single match,
so the total number of goals giving the lead to a team might be higher than the number of matches played by the team.
Lead-defending ability Sunderland have taken the lead 19 times and have conceded an equalizer on 5 instances, translating into a lead-defending rate of 74% (for an opponents' equalizing rate of 26%).
Equalizing ability Of the 24 times that Sunderland's opponents have taken the lead, Sunderland have managed to score an equalizer on 12 instances, translating into an equalizing rate of 50%.
In this example, Sunderland have been in the lead for an average duration of 21.0 minutes per match played at home (based on a 90-minute match duration), which is longer than the average duration of 14.3 minutes per match during which their opponents were in the lead in those matches.
Lead-defending ability (at home) In home matches, Sunderland have taken the lead 11 times and have conceded an equalizer on 2 occasions, translating into a home lead-defending rate of 82% (for an opponents' equalizing rate of 18%).
Equalizing ability (at home) Of the 10 times that Sunderland's opponents have taken the lead when Sunderland were playing at home, Sunderland have managed to score an equalizer on 6 occasions, translating into a home equalizing rate of 60%.
In this example, Sunderland have been in the lead for an average duration of 9.3 minutes per match played away (based on a 90-minute match duration), which is lower than the average duration of 29.6 minutes per match during which their opponents were in the lead in those matches.
Lead-defending ability (away) In away matches, Sunderland have taken the lead 8 times and have conceded an equalizer on 3 occasions, translating into an away lead-defending rate of 62% (for an opponents' equalizing rate of 38%).
Equalizing ability (away) Of the 14 times that Sunderland's opponents have taken the lead when Sunderland were playing away, Sunderland have managed to score an equalizer on 6 occasions, translating into an away equalizing rate of 43%.
Sunderland stats rank the team in 7th position in the Premier League table with 54 points, 3 points behind Bournemouth.

The 'League average' indicator refers to the average value for all teams in the league since the beginning of the season.
In this example, Chelsea have been in the lead for an average duration of 25.9 minutes per match (based on a 90-minute match duration), which is longer than the average duration of 25.6 minutes per match during which their opponents were in the lead in those matches.
Lead-defending ability Chelsea have taken the lead 23 times and have conceded an equalizer on 9 instances, translating into a lead-defending rate of 61% (for an opponents' equalizing rate of 39%).
Equalizing ability Of the 24 times that Chelsea's opponents have taken the lead, Chelsea have managed to score an equalizer on 10 instances, translating into an equalizing rate of 42%.
In this example, Chelsea have been in the lead for an average duration of 30.8 minutes per match played at home (based on a 90-minute match duration), which is longer than the average duration of 17.1 minutes per match during which their opponents were in the lead in those matches.
Lead-defending ability (at home) In home matches, Chelsea have taken the lead 15 times and have conceded an equalizer on 8 occasions, translating into a home lead-defending rate of 47% (for an opponents' equalizing rate of 53%).
Equalizing ability (at home) Of the 9 times that Chelsea's opponents have taken the lead when Chelsea were playing at home, Chelsea have managed to score an equalizer on 2 occasions, translating into a home equalizing rate of 22%.
In this example, Chelsea have been in the lead for an average duration of 21.1 minutes per match played away (based on a 90-minute match duration), which is lower than the average duration of 34.2 minutes per match during which their opponents were in the lead in those matches.
Lead-defending ability (away) In away matches, Chelsea have taken the lead 8 times and have conceded an equalizer on 1 occasion, translating into an away lead-defending rate of 88% (for an opponents' equalizing rate of 12%).
Equalizing ability (away) Of the 15 times that Chelsea's opponents have taken the lead when Chelsea were playing away, Chelsea have managed to score an equalizer on 8 occasions, translating into an away equalizing rate of 53%.
